Academic Programs and Units Proposal Routing

Steps in the Route

Proposal Types that are EXEMPT from this Step

STEP ONE: Submission of materials to Patti J. King, Office of Academic Affairs, MLK 320, with the signature of the department head(s) and college dean(s).

NO EXEMPTIONS: All proposals must be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs.

STEP TWO: Submission of proposal to the Undergraduate Council (UC) or Graduate Council (GC)

1. If the proposal concerns an undergraduate program, or a joint undergraduate/graduate program, it must be approved by the UC.

A. Current practice of the UC is that the proposal is first brought to the Academic Programs Subcommittee.

B. Action by the Subcommittee is prerequisite to inclusion of the proposal on the UC Agenda.

2. If the proposal concerns a graduate program, or a joint undergraduate/graduate program, it must be approved by the GC.

    1. Proposals for graduate programs are first submitted to the Graduate College Associate Dean.
    2. Proposals for Graduate  Interdisciplinary Programs are first submitted to the Assistant Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs.
EXEMPTION: Proposals having to do with the establishment or reorganization of a unit that does NOT sponsor any academic programs do not require submission to these Faculty Councils.

STEP THREE: Submission of proposal for Administrative Review

  1. Approval of the College Academic Administrators Council CAAC.
    Action by CAAC is prerequisite to inclusion of the proposal on Team Provost’s agenda.
  2. Provost
    Approval of the Provost occurs after review by Team Provost, which includes the Academic Vice Presidents and Vice Provosts.

EXEMPTION: Proposals having to do with the establishment or reorganization of a unit that does NOT sponsor any academic programs do not require submission to CAAC. 

STEP FOUR: Submission of proposal to the Faculty Senate

1. Current practice of the Faculty Senate is that the proposal is first brought to the Executive Committee.

2. The agenda for Faculty Senate is set by the Executive Committee.

3. Recommendations of the Faculty Senate are advisory to the President, it is the President who brings viable proposals forward for further review.

 

EXEMPTION: Proposals pertaining to units which do not offer academic programs do not need Faculty Senate approval.

STEP FIVE: Submission of proposal to the Chief Academic Officers

The Chief Academic Officers (CAOs) of the three Arizona Universities review the proposal and make a recommendation (generally approval) to the Arizona Board of Regents’ Academic Affairs Committee.

EXEMPTION: Proposals pertaining to units which do not offer academic programs do not need CAO approval.

ALL proposals having to do with units that offer academic programs DO require CAO approval.

 

STEP SIX: Submission of proposal to the Arizona Board of Regents

1. Current practice of the Arizona Board of Regents is that the proposal is first brought to the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC).

The Academic Affairs Committee recommends programs and organizations to the Arizona Board of Regents.  

  1. ABOR approval is required to implement a new program or create a new academic unit or to merge, rename or otherwise change a existing program or academic unit.  

 

EXEMPTION: Proposals pertaining to units which do not offer academic programs do not need AAC or ABOR approval.

 

ALL proposals having to do with units that offer academic programs DO require AAC and ABOR approval.
